Beaumont Layberth Facility

The Beaumont Layberth site is in a very remote location on the Sabine River in Louisiana.  The $35 million project included the construction of a North and a South pier with approach ramps and catwalks to mooring structures. Four ships can be berthed (2 berthed and 2 nested) at each pier for a total of eight LMSR type vessels. The owner of the project is the U.S. Department of Transportation Maritime Administration (MARAD).

Bath performed the electrical and mechanical design including modifications and extensions to a 2.4 mile 13.2kV line consisting of underground and overhead distribution using S&C PMH fused pad-mounted switches to service the piers.  Each pier was provide with 15kV, 500 amp electrical receptacles.  The design provided 1600 amps at 480v, 3 phase to each ship (10.5 MVA total).    A 480v, 3 phase distribution panel mounted on a HD galvanized switch rack on each pier provides power for lighting on the piers and also power centers providing 120v to the piers. Lighting controls on the switch rack have photo cells for ON and HOA override. Lighting on the approach, piers and catwalks is accomplished with marine grade copper free metal halide light fixtures.

Other  features of the project included the design of a water well and a water treatment system for 25,000 gal/day, a modular waste treatment system for 25,000gal/day and a river water fire protection system. 

After initial design, the government determined that insufficient funds were available, so the project was placed on hold.
